The artist
Lilian Fäustle was born in Hamburg, Germany, but grew up in Holland. Since 1994 she is based in Amsterdam.
Coming from a family of painters, dancers and musicians, art has always been an integral part of her upbringing. Initially she chose Communication Studies over art school; however she has always continued to paint, draw and she developed a strong interest in interior design and furniture restoration.
 |
During a visit to Portugal, Lilian was grasped by the almost unlimited possibilities of mosaics and tiles.
"It is the aspect of applied art, the combination of usefulness and beauty which makes this medium so fascinating. Art for me should not only be delightful but also practical and durable." |
The artist's designs are inspired by ornamental art from both the east and the west, delicately combining and often fusing different styles like Moorish, Asian, Persian, Classical Italian and Art Deco, just to name a few. Since 2002 Lilian has committed herself to teaching and running numerous workshops at various mosaic schools in Holland and Germany.
She has successfully followed courses in Ravenna, Italy, to broaden her knowledge of classic Italian glass mosaics. In 2007 her free work was awarded the ‘organisations favourite’ prize of the International Mosaic Biennale in Chartres and between commissions Lilian loves to dream up new collections during Artist in Residency programmes in Europe and Indonesia.
Recently Lilian Fäustle has engaged in several community projects. ‘Mosaics are a perfect medium for group works which enchant and bring more colour to neighbourhoods. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with young people from all kinds of backgrounds, to see them develop creativity and self esteem. It is very rewarding and lots of fun’.
